CAPTAIN PAULO ÂNGELO
Captain Paulo Ângelo was born in Almada in 1967. He joined the Navy Academy in 1985 and graduated in 1990.
He specialized in Anti-Submarine Warfare (PWO-U) in 1992 and completed Staff Course in 2001. He also attended several other courses, namely NATO Staff Orientation Course (NATO School Oberammergau, 2005), Maritime Warfare Course (HMS Dryad, 2005), and Senior Course 116 (NATO Defense College, 2010). He also attended several courses related with weaponry, sensors and Education and Training.
Along his career he has served at sea for numerous occasions from which the more relevant were as PWO(U) of NRP Comandante Sacadura Cabral (1992-1994); as PWO(U) and Public Relations Officer of NRP Côrte-Real (1996-1999); as Staff Operations Officer of the Portuguese Task Group (POTG) (2002-2005); as Staff Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer and Staff Force Protection Officer of the SNMG1 (2005-2006); and as Chief of Staff of the POTG (2006-2007). From July 2014 to September 2016, he took over command of NRP Bartolomeu Dias.
Ashore he has served as Director of the ASW School (2001-2005); as Head of Analysis, Training and Evaluation Department at the Navy Tactical Centre (2004-2005); as Deputy Commander of the Surface Escorts Squadron (2006-2007); as Military Assistant to the Portuguese Chief of Defence (2007-2010); as Liaison Officers Coordinator during NATO Lisbon Summit 2010; as Staff Officer of the NATO International Military Staff, Operations Division, in the NATO HQ in Brussels (2011-2014); and as Head of the Navy Military Cooperation Department in the Navy Staff (2014).
Along his career, he has participated in numerous national and international exercises and operations such as Operation Sharp Fence (WEO, Adriatic Sea 1993); Operation Crocodilo/Falcão (National, Guinea-Bissau 1998-1999); Operation Allied Force (NATO, 1999); Operation Active Endeavour (NATO, 2005); and exercises Obangame Express 15 and Saharan Express 15 (US Africom, Gulf of Guinea 2015). When ashore, he participated in several meetings of the NATO Maritime Working Group as National Representative (2004-2005); assisted the PRT CHOD in numerous Military Committee meetings (both NATO and EU, 2007-2010); was responsible for the organization of the NATO Military Committee Conference, which took place in Portugal in September 2009, and the 5+5 Initiative at CHOD’s level, in November 2009; among other duties.
He is STRIKFORNATO´s Deputy Chief of Staff Support since 9 November 2016.
Along his carrier, he was awarded with several decorations and commendations. Captain Paulo Ângelo is married to Maria Fernando Ângelo, lives in Corroios (Seixal), and they have three children Inês, Rita, and Afonso.
