STRIKFORNATO celebrates its 68th Anniversary

Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO) today celebrated its 68th anniversary with a cake-cutting ceremony, held at its headquarters in Oeiras, Portugal. The event was led by the Deputy Commander, Rear Admiral Guy Robinson OBE, accompanied by the Senior Enlisted Advisor, Master Chief Petty Officer Andrea Mannavola, and the Command’s most Junior Enlisted Sailor, Second Class Petty Officer Larissa Goodin.

The last year has been a difficult and demanding one for much of the world. During this time STRIKFORNATO has continued to deliver on behalf of its member Nations and the wider NATO Alliance. I have been deeply impressed by the resilience and spirit shown by the staff of STRIKFORNATO.

Addressing a message to STRIKFORNATO’s staff, RAdm Robinson stated that "The last year has been a difficult and demanding one for much of the world. During this time STRIKFORNATO has continued to deliver on behalf of its member Nations and the wider NATO Alliance. I have been deeply impressed by the resilience and spirit shown by the staff of STRIKFORNATO and their families in the face of such significant challenges. Going forwards into another year we will continue to balance our commitment to achieving the mission alongside doing everything we can to keep our people as safe as possible, and I am confident we will continue to succeed as we always have done.”

First established in 1953 in Naples, Italy, as STRIKFORSOUTH and redesignated as STRIKFORNATO in 2004, the Command relocated to Oeiras, Portugal in Summer of 2012, where it remains to this day.

The Command’s mission statement is: “On order, STRIKFORNATO will provide a Joint Battle Staff under SACEUR's direct Operational Command (OPCOM) to deliver a rapidly deployable and scalable headquarters capable of planning and executing full spectrum joint maritime operations, primarily through the integration of U.S. naval and amphibious forces, in order to provide assurance, deterrence, and collective defence for the Alliance.”

STRIKFORNATO is a Memorandum of Understanding organisation consisting of thirteen member nations: Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, the U.K. and U.S.
