Bundeswehr Military Students Visit STRIKFORNATO

OEIRAS, Portugal – Senior military officers from the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College (BwCSC) visited Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO) headquarters in Oeiras, Portugal, February 7, as part of their broader training and professional development.

The students from the National General/Admiral Staff Officer Course (NGASOC) at the BwCSC were briefed on STRIKFORNATO’s role in delivering high-end maritime strike and defence capabilities across the Alliance, and received a tour of the command’s facilities, including the Joint Operations Centre (JOC), where strategic operations, military exercises and peace-time vigilance activities are coordinated. The students also had the opportunity to engage with STRIKFORNATO’s multinational staff, gaining insights into individual responsibilities as well as the inner workings of the NATO command structure.

We all have a general idea of STRIKFORNATO, but it was good to really see the defensive capabilities it provides to the whole of the Alliance

“We all have a general idea of STRIKFORNATO, but it was good to really see the defensive capabilities it provides to the whole of the Alliance, including the scope of all the exercises and activities across NATO,” said Lt. Cmdr. Steven Ralfs, a German Navy Officer and one of the NGASOC students.

Founded in 1957, the BwCSC plays a key role in training senior military personnel for leadership roles within the German Armed Forces, NATO, the European Union, and the United Nations. The institution educates both German nationals and international students, fostering a collaborative, multinational approach to military decision making.

The prestigious NGASOC is a two-year course designed for military officers from traditional military branches, as well as preparing them to confront a wide range of challenges in joint operations during peace, crisis, and war. The program educates officers in military science and operational art, covering topics such as military history, doctrine, and contemporary operations; operational planning and theory; and the application of national elements of power.

The visit to STRIKFORNATO allowed the students to gain valuable insights into NATO operations, and provided an opportunity to build relationships that will be beneficial in their future positions, helping to ensure that NATO continues to function as history’s most successful Alliance.
